Engaging Communities in Reducing Gun Violence

The Joint Center, the Urban Institute, and The Joyce Foundation released their report Engaging Communities in Reducing Gun Violence: A Road Map for Safer Communities.

Over the last year, the organization convened more than 100 community members in three diverse American cities—Richmond, Virginia, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Stockton, California. The convenings included faith leaders, law enforcement, social service providers, formerly incarcerated individuals, elected officials, and other community members.

The 67-page Engaging Communities report details what they heard.

The report is groundbreaking, as the communities looked at the issue in the context of policing practices and mass incarceration. Many recognized that many community members own firearms for self-defense, but also stated that preventing access to firearms by people at high risk of violence prevents gun violence without contributing to overincarceration. They also indicated abusive policing practices fuel distrust of police and inhibit effective law enforcement, and that more intervention and support for those at high risk of committing gun violence would reduce gun violence.
